Group Skating Lessons

Check out available Group Skating lessons at Cape Arena! Classes are taught by Monica Malcomson, current 2nd grade teacher and former professional and competitive figure skater.

Basic Skills Group Class

For hockey and figure skaters (ages 4-7*) who want more direct coaching than Saturday Super Skates offers, this class will focus more closely on small group instruction of foundational skating skills. Your skater must be able to stand on the ice alone and support their own body weight. We will learn how to properly fall and get up, stop, march, jump in place, turn around, two-foot glide, and forward swizzle. This class is engaging in fun and interactive ways for all participants to improve their basic skills and focus on safe body control.

*Please note that the age range for this class is simply a guideline and the most important component is the participants’ abilities. Please contact us for further support or guidance.

Beginner Group Class

This class is for hockey and figure skaters (ages 7-12*) who have a solid grasp of basic skills and want to expand their foundational elements skill set. Your skater must know how to safely fall, get up, march, jump in place, turn around, two-foot glide, and forward swizzle. We will review those elements and then begin working on 1-foot glides, dips, steering and backwards swizzles/skating.

All Star All Skate

This class is an inclusion class designed to embrace the needs of all aspiring skaters (ages 7 and older). It is specifically for skaters who identify as having an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD). We will offer some adaptive/safety equipment as needed (walkers, helmets, etc.) and look forward to collaborating with caregivers when necessary. We will focus on basic skills, safety, strength and coordination, interactive games, and building friendship. Please email Coach Monica, for more information to further discuss this exciting opportunity in collaboration with the Best Buddies Brown School chapter and the Cape Elizabeth Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee.

Power Skate Group Class

This class is designed for hockey and figure skaters (7 and up) aiming to level up their beginner skills (stopping, forward and backward swizzles, 1 foot glide) and quickly advance by practicing drills for gaining power and speed through longer distance swizzles, stroking, and edge control both forward and backwards. We will also target instruction for forward and backward crossovers. Skaters who want to improve their technique, control, speed and power will gain a great deal from this class!

Golden Edge Group Class

Ice skating is a lifelong sport and this class is honoring the joy of all adult levels (18-100 years old)! It will be broken into two parts: a 15 minute guided collaborative practice and a 15 minute targeted instruction mini-lesson. Please keep the safety of your body in mind and consult with your doctor if you’re longing to skate yet feeling at all physically hesitant to partake in this class. We are excited to support you on starting or continuing your ice skating journey!
